Maryland filings

The state paperwork that catches Maryland owners out

Federal filing is only half of it. A Maryland business has its own calendar, and the items below are the ones that most often arrive as a penalty notice rather than as a reminder.

  • Annual report and personal property return. Filed with the State Department of Assessments and Taxation through Maryland Business Express. Missing it can eventually forfeit the entity's good standing.
  • Sales and use tax. Registration, collection and periodic returns to the Comptroller of Maryland — with a different rate for alcoholic beverages than for everything else.
  • Withholding and unemployment insurance. Separate registrations, separate deposit schedules, separate notices.
  • Pass-through entity returns. Form 510 for the entity and non-resident member obligations when an owner lives outside Maryland.
  • Corporate income tax. Form 500 for C-corporations, plus apportionment once you sell or hire across state lines.

We handle these alongside the federal return, which is the point of one firm doing both — see tax preparation and the tax center for the official links and deadlines.

Local industries

The Baltimore businesses we know best

Gas stations and convenience stores

Fuel margins, lottery, ATM income and inventory shrink — categories a generic bookkeeper usually gets wrong. Sunoco, BP and Exxon dealers are among our clients.

Restaurants and pizzerias

Tips, food cost percentage, delivery-platform deposits and sales tax on prepared food, all reconciled to the POS instead of estimated.

Trucking and dispatch

Owner-operators and small fleets: per-diem treatment, equipment depreciation, and the multi-state filings that follow the freight.

Medical and dental practices

Practice payroll, equipment purchases and owner compensation for practices around the Baltimore hospital corridor.

Contractors and fabricators

Kitchen and bath contractors, granite and marble fabricators: job costing, subcontractor 1099s and progress billing.

Real estate agents and daycares

Commission income, mileage and home-office rules for agents; enrollment-based revenue and staff payroll for daycares and education centers.

806 Reisterstown Rd, Suite 5, Pikesville, MD 21208, open Monday to Friday from 10:00 to 16:00. In-person meetings are by appointment, so the person you meet is the one who knows your file.

Pikesville, Owings Mills, Reisterstown, Randallstown, Towson, Lutherville-Timonium, Woodlawn, Catonsville and Baltimore City, plus the rest of Baltimore County, Howard County and Anne Arundel County. Outside Maryland we file in 30 states.

Q Do you handle Maryland state filings as well as federal?

Yes — Comptroller of Maryland corporate and pass-through returns, sales and use tax, withholding and unemployment insurance registration, and the annual report and personal property return filed with SDAT.

Q Can you register a new Maryland business for me?

Yes. We advise which entity type fits, register the business, obtain the federal EIN and the Maryland accounts you need, and set up bookkeeping and payroll so year one starts clean.
